Dream cruise aboard the ship Paul Gauguin in Marquesas, Tuamotu, and Society Islands.
The Marquesas Islands are part of the archipelago of French Polynesia and lie in a world of their own. Isolated, they developed a culture and a language, the Marquesan, which is subdivided into two dialects corresponding to the two groups of islands.
Our destination in this still-wild archipelago is the island of Fatu Hiva, whose inhabitants make impressive tapa, a magnificent work of transforming vegetable fibres into fabrics decorated with Polynesian motifs. You can pay tribute to Paul Gauguin who made Hiva Oa his last home. The picturesque village of Hapatoni on the island of Ua Huka is the keeper of a local craft that is still alive and flourishing. You will discover amazing wooden sculptures and a seaside path paved with hundred-year-old pebbles. We will also stop at Nuku Hiva, where the author of the novel Moby Dick, Herman Melville, was kept captive.
In the Tuamotu archipelago, the ship makes a first stopover in Fakarava, a wild eden with exotic birds, green plants, and rare marine species. You will find pink sand beaches, a black pearl farm, and a church built of coral.
Your two-week idyllic journey will end in the Society Islands, where you will make stops at Huahine (“the Garden Island”) and Bora Bora, described by James A. Michener as “the most beautiful island in the world”, as well as Motu Mahana, our private island and Moorea, the island that inspired the composer of the famous “Bali Hai” melody from the musical South Pacific.
